Imagine nearing the largest solid construction of the ancient roman world that was intimidating, immense, powerful that its very name derived from being colossal. Upon nearing the colossal building the stench of blood loomed as would have the deafening sounds of the: crowds cheering in the stands, animals wailing as they ready to attack and sword against steel as men known as gladiators fight in epic combat. This was all but a common day down by the Colosseum.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION…
Rome, the world’s greatest empire whose boarders shouldered terrain spanning from the Nile to the Danube and from Palestine to Spain. A power so advanced, organised and strong it controlled the entire Mediterranean basin for more than 500 years. Then sometime in the second century AD almost as soon as Rome reached maximum expansion cracks began to appear and a collapse appeared to be impending. Fatefully in 476 AD Rome the original city central to the entire empire, an impenetrable location and garrison for 800 years had fallen. Waves of differing barbaric groups took hostage the capitol whilst the Empire’s surrounding territories began to collapse like dominos.
What lead to the disintegration of Rome’s dominance? Was it religion, politics, plague or simply had Rome become a beast so big it was impossible to sustain? This experience will journey through time and explore the numerous social, political, technological and territorial factors that lead to a believed impenetrable force’s complete decimation. Together we will discover particular reigns of emperors whose decisions impacted Rome’s evolution and the forces that conspired against the giant superpower. Rome is a story synonymous with glory that seemingly appears to have been divined by the will of the Gods. However, did this great civilisation ever completely collapse, or did it merely shift direction with the sands of time.
New, dramatic and bold was the style Caravaggio bought from the North of Italy to Rome. By the 1600s Genre painting was already popular in Northern Europe, however it was a new novelty to the aristocracy of Rome and Caravaggio’s particularly brazen style soon cemented his fame amongst elite clientele. For his time Caravaggio would be an artist to flip the traditional practices of art, which would lead to criticism from art historians deeming his style roguish and controversial.
This virtual experience will explain all the reasons as to why Caravaggio even today remains so scandalous! Whilst Caravaggio definitely was an artist tempestuous in nature and whose life was as dramatic as his painting style, he still remained a favourite artist to the church’s elite. Although Caravaggio would push boundaries and rebel against art principles, did he, however, disrespect the rules as much as the art historians want us to believe?
In 1610 Caravaggio’s tumultuous life unfortunately came to an abrupt end at the young age of 39, and remains a death that is shrouded still in mystery. This virtual experience pieces together the backstory and understanding to the artist’s complicated life from the mere fragments history has left us. Caravaggio’s story is, of a man who challenged tradition and inspired a new radical style of painting and together we will re-create his dramatic colourful life.
We know the sun to be at the centre of our galaxy, and that gravity is what keeps us from falling off our incredible blue/green planet earth. Imagine, however, a time before these scientific proofs when we humans believed ourselves to be at the very centre of the universe.
On January 7, 1610 Galileo Galilei’s observations of the night skies launched the beginnings of the “Scientific Revolution”. By the 1700s an age of “Reason” and “Rational” swept through European communities. Education was now a priority and new ideals of Governance were introduced. Previously, power had been inherited by Kings who ruled through “Divine Right”. However, the King’s moral authority was questioned when science’s technological inventions allowed common populations financial gains from industrialisation. Established aristocracies made the mistake of believing they were untouchable, and this ill fated mistake lead to their violent downfall as revolutions sparked across France. Grim revolutions, however, bore much terror leading people to question whether science’s rational had resulted in a loss of empathy!
Enlightenment Vs Religion’s experience explores the art of the revolutions and the change in sentiment expressed by artists as they try to reconcile Enlightenment’s themes of Science with spiritual religious belief. From Canova to Delacroix the history of this period is explained through the artworks of artists who championed the ideals of the people which define our modern era.
In the final decades of the 1800s the power of steam was hurtling societies into a dizzying era of Modernity, Light, and Rail. Technology spurred on architectural revitalisation, and Paris the city of light epitomised the ideals of a contemporary new world. A dominant culture of the middle class was born creating indulgences of weekends, picnics and the café to take centre stage.
The motion and movement of light captivated artists to create fleeting moments of City Life and Idyllic Countryside across their canvases. As fast as the speed of light, colour was splashed in energetic brushstrokes, however, in a seemingly unfinished manner. This lead the protagonists of this movement to be known as “The Impressionists” those who a canvas solely with an idea and a sweeping of paint.
The “Impressionists” virtual experience explores one of the most famous art movements of all time. A transient expression that has continued to endure through the ages will be discovered through protagonists including Monet, Renoir plus more. Canvases of vivid vitality will uncover a world spinning from a medieval past into the vibrant present day.
